REST is a free, nonprofit art education ecosystem in Japan that connects metaverse-based learning with real-world creative practice.
Metaverse Art University REST was founded in 2024 to make art, philosophy, literature, and AI-related learning accessible to anyone, regardless of age, location, educational background, disability, or financial circumstances. All classes are offered free of charge in a social virtual reality environment, allowing participants to join anonymously through avatars and learn through lectures, dialogue, creative exercises, and shared experiences.
The program is designed not only for passive learning, but also to help participants move from audience members to learners, and from learners to creators. Participants can encounter new ideas, develop their own forms of expression, and connect their learning with opportunities to present their work.
This educational cycle is extended into the physical world through AI Art Gallery REST, a permanent, free exhibition space in Osaka. The gallery provides AI artists and emerging creators with opportunities to exhibit their work without participation fees. It also introduces visitors to diverse approaches to AI-assisted creativity, including the concepts, prompts, experimentation, selection, editing, and reflection behind each work.
Together, the metaverse university and the physical gallery create a hybrid pathway connecting encounter, learning, creation, and public presentation. REST demonstrates that meaningful art education does not require expensive facilities, formal enrollment, or commercial membership. It can be built through accessible digital spaces, small physical venues, volunteer-based management, and an open community.
The project is operated by the nonprofit Waon Project under the mission “Creating places of belonging in the gaps of culture.” Its aim is to ensure that everyone has the right to encounter creative expression and the opportunity to become a creator.
